I've modified a little painting to offer you (girls of ALL ages) free valentines! E-mail me at carla@carlasonheim.com and I will e-mail you back an 8.5x11 file for you to print out at home--it has 9 images on the page for you to cut out at home...just like grade school! (I promise not to put you on my mailing list unless you specifically indicate that you want to be on it!) HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

1/23/2007 - New Painting |
Newest in a series I'm excited about... "Dreaming of Birds" - see the full painting here. I encourage all of you artists (writers, painters, sculptors, actors, cooks, etc.) to work in a series. Pick a theme and push it as far as it goes. (You'll "know" when it's time to move on.)

1/22/2007 - Deadlines make me get to work! |
I'm on deadline today through Wednesday.... finishing things I've had WEEKS to do! (So typical... you, too?) My biggest project is getting the display and packaging together for "Girls" transfers and prints... a Rep on the east coast is going to see if there is interest in children's stores... I'm also putting together a package of journals to send to an artist friend who is going to put them in her upcoming book.... I'm so blessed. So many doors are opening with my art and I just feel so thankful. I'm spending the next two months creating work to sell at two April shows and on etsy. I'm already looking forward to Artfest in late March... okay. I'm rambling about nothing... back to work!

1/17/2007 - Journals! |
I decided to make myself a journal over the holidays. It couldn't be too big, because I get bored easily. Plus, I don't write every day, so a "normal" journal could take me a year to finish. This is not good at all... I have shelves full of 1/3 completed journals. These journals are perfect for me (32 pages). I finish them in about a month. Boredom solved. I am not doing the best today. My first clue was when I burst into tears at the mention of doing our taxes. (Steve and I have been married 15 years... he wisely said, "Let's do them tomorrow. When you feel better.") I am trying to keep myself busy with mindless tasks today and wait until I have more energy to tackle the big things. I'm 43. I like being this age. I am so much more self-forgiving now!

1/12/2007 - Mary Lou Zeek Gallery Show ... my entry |
Here is my piece for this cool show. All proceeds benefit YWCA's Salem Outreach Shelter in Salem, Oregon.
Press Release The Mary Lou Zeek will be presenting the "100 Artists – S.O.S. Show 2007", the show will run from February 6 – March 3, 2007. Over the last 4 years, these shows have been a favorite of the gallery clients and also people across the nation. About the Shelter: YWCA's Salem Outreach Shelter (S.O.S). Nine is the average age of a homeless person in the United States. Families with children account for 40% of the nation's homeless population. These two shocking statistics emphasize the importance of the YWCA's Salem Outreach Shelter (S.O.S). www.ywcasalem.org
The shelter's goal is to break the cycle of homelessness in our community, 10 families at a time. SOS has been providing shelter and supportive services for families since 1987. Families stay in a stable, nurturing environment for up to 6 months while changing and improving their lives. They attend classes on money management, parenting, and life skills. Children receive tutoring and mentoring and participate in life enrichment activities. The shelter is unique in the Salem area, as it is the only transitional housing shelter that also provides intensive, goal-oriented case management.
The concept Participating artists each received a 5" x 8" piece of cardboard through the mail on October 15, 2006. The item was used as a starting point for their piece of art with a completed maximum size of 8"x 8". Each piece of cardboard was sent "as is", was not packaged, but rather processed directly by the postal service firsthand. The stamps and address on the back will remain a part of the artwork for identification and for the evidence of the actual mailing. For more info, go to www.zeekgallery.com.

1/9/2007 - Establishing a Routine |
One difficult thing about working for yourself is an inherent lack of structure. Usually when I have a show or other impending deadline, I can buckle down and work hard. But when my next major deadline is at the end of March, I'm not so motivated. What happens, then, is a lot of goofing off. I spend more time online. I go ahead and watch "Hogan's Heroes" with Wes when he gets home from school. Etc. Actually, I know that my "down time" is essential to the creative life I have chosen. And I'm so grateful for it! But at times I let it go a little far, I think. My solution is to try and set up more of a routine to my days. For what it's worth, here it is: 8:00 - 9:00 - Drive Wes to school, make coffee, check e-mails, goof off online, breakfast with Steve (in that order). 9:00 - 12:00 - Paint or make purses or journals. 12:00 - 1:00 - lunch 1:00 - 3:00 - Fill etsy orders, add new items, etc. 3:00 - 5:30 - goof off with Wes, go to the bank and PO, work on whatever So far so good (I'm on day #2).

1/4/2007 - Goals |
Today I met with my friend Karine Swenson and went over some business goals for the next few weeks and months. We got in the habit of meeting like this before the holidays and both found it so helpful to:
- Publicly voice our goals for the week, and
- Have someone to hold us accountable.
We never accomplished exactly what we had set out to do, but both of us agree that we get a lot more done than we normally would had we not decided to meet....
One of my goals this month is to list a piece of original art a day on etsy. I need to get rid of stuff is one reason. Another is that I'm not really a "print" girl myself (which is ironic since I've had 90% of my etsy sales with prints and transfers...), But when I find an artist online that I like I always want to see the originals they have listed, not prints. So, I'm thinking there are others out there that feel the same.

12/31/2006 - A shedding... |
The above little painting was done several years ago about growing up with my mother. It was very cathartic to do and surprising as well... it kind of came to me suddenly without warning, and turned out to be the beginning of some pretty major realizations. Much healing has happened the past two years! Hurray! As a celebration I am wanting to purge my studio of a lot of my old drawings, paintings etc. (You can snag some of them if you want from my etsy store.) I want to continue to let go of the past and embrace the future... I am looking forward to 2007 ... lots of art, lots of Star Trek with Wes, lots of girlfriend talk time (phone-email-in person)... Please be a part of my journey!

12/29/2006 - Our Little House |
This is our snowy house this morning. I cropped out the tire swing on the left and our car in the driveway to the right... my studio is at the very back of the house -- a converted back porch. You can see me and the flash from my camera reflected in the door. It is snowy-snowy!!! I love it (but I'm not traveling... poor travelers!) Happy day!

12/28/2006 - Merry belated Christmas |

- Since one of my pet peeves is bloggers apologizing for not posting for so long, I wont. : )
- Merry Christmas!
- I saw the most amazing singer/songwriter/performer last week here in Salida: www.jonahwerner.com. I love this kid. Check out the Live at Boulder album/Medley song from the link for a little sampler!
- MUST clean out my studio. Will be posting an "Original a Day" on my etsy site... things that haven't sold all year or old, old stuff... some of it will be normally priced and some will be cheap, cheap!
- The photo above is of a large commission I finished just before Christmas... four sisters!
- Check out Wes's site.
- Need a good book for these wonderful snowy winter evenings... any recommendations?
- Bye for now!

11/30/2006 - Still in Colorado |

-9 degrees this morning! I reluctantly cancelled my trip to Seattle yesterday due to snow on both ends... I live 3 hours from the airport on a clear day and I would have missed my flight driving in the snow... then the event itself was in danger of being cancelled due to the snow/ice in Seattle. So... I spent yesterday in a state of uneasiness... what to do? I finally got SOMETHING done about 4:30pm... I designed the front page of my woefully out-of-date website: www.carlasonheim.com. Today I plan to work on some commissions and start planning a "Half Art Sale/Half Garage Sale/Half Christmas Party" event for December 8th-9th. (Steve and I decided to have this last night when it sunk in that I wasn't making any money in Seattle this weekend.) What are you doing today?

11/24/2006 - Fish on the Commode |

We had Thanksgiving Dinner at our house yesterday with friends. It was wonderful.! I didn't get a photo of the turkey, or any of our guests, but I WAS moved to take this photo of a partly melted fish candle on top of our super-clean toilet. (Imagine two preteen boys and a grown man wrestling in the next room for the photo's soundtrack.)

11/22/2006 - My First Love |

I didn't go to art school - I was a History major! But when I was about 30 I started taking life drawing lessons at a nearby community college. A few years later, I took a printmaking class and was introduced to monotypes. I fell in love!
But I haven't had the studio/space/press/etc. to do them in recent years, so I developed my painting style instead.... But yesterday I spent a wonderful four hours with artist Karine Swenson. Here is a horse that I reworked with watercolor and charcoal and ink today. I'm in love all over again! (See more here.) Thank you, Karine!

11/18/2006 - French Boy |
This is a drawing I did last night while half-watching a movie with the guys... my studio is right next to the family room and so I could lay on the floor with the studio lights on and see what I was doing, turning around and pausing every once in awhile... I wanted to try and draw more realistically (inspired by Dali again... he did a BEAUTIFUL drawing (scroll down on link above) of his father and sister that got me excited to draw like this again). I'm very proud of this drawing, though if you look at my reference (Young Boy, Gondeville, Charente, France, 1951 by photographer Paul Strand), you see that I didn't quite get his wonderful expression. Oh well. I'm trying to not pick at that, even though the goal would be a better likeness. I do think that it's a beautiful drawing on its own..... (Isn't it hard to just love oneself unconditionally?)
