What a day. When we got here this morning Mikie’s heart rate was in the 130’s. He didn’t act like he was in stress, but we were concerned. I went to work but called several times and Mikie kept getting worse, with his heart rate going over 150 and 160. They came to pull the feeding tube and by then he was really getting worked up. Even after they got the tube out and the new G-tube in his condition escalated to where his heart rate went over 200 and his temp got up to 106. They gave him seizure meds as soon as they got the new feeding tube in and it didn’t even phase him. Keep in mind that we are on the 8th floor because there were no beds on 6. This is the orthopedic floor and they rarely see stuff like this. The majority of nurses on this floor are LPN’s, not RN’s. Mikie’s nurse today, Kim, is pretty sharp and knows what she is doing. She got right on the horn with some docs and got them involved. They got a cooling blanket and ice packs around him and by the time I got here around 2:30 PM they had him pretty stable. It’s almost 3:30 now and his heart rate is dropping from 119 and hour ago down to 103 now. His body temp is back to normal. He is resting peacefully.
I was a nervous wreck by the time I got here, I just didn’t know what to expect when I got off the elevator and started down the hall. I was greeted by Bobby Farmer and he was smiling so I knew it couldn’t be all bad. He asked me how I was doing and I told him I wouldn’t know until I knew how Mikie was doing. He assured me he was fine. Lorraine filled me in when I got to the room.
Now we wait. More later.
