Mikie's Blog

• 12/18/2005 - CCU

We got a call at 2 AM this morning, they were moving Mikie to the CCU on the 5th floor.  His heart was flying again, up in the 170’s and his temp was rising as well.  It’s 6:30 AM now and we just left (shift change, they kicked us out) and he has only really begun to calm down.  His heart rate was between 125 and 140 when we left.  Still no clue as to what is causing the problem.  Dr, Emmer came back in, he is once again calling it sepsis.  I’m sticking with pain in the gut, and it may be from something that is infected, but all the blood work so far does not lead to that.

We go back at 9 AM, I’ll post more as I find it.

Hi Lorrainne, I hope that you and Mikie have gotten some rest. I was wondering if the Docs have ruled out C-diff (a GI infection). This is something we routinely test for if patients have frequent loose stools and abdominal discomfort. Easily ruled out with a stool culture. Nursing should know if this test has been performed. Also- don't let any doctor may you feel like you are asking too many questions. All our good Doctors take the time out to inform family of what they think is going on and then ask "Do you have any more questions". If any doc is not doing that- then shame on them.

Lisa, that’s a good point and yes, they have checked several stools and find no infection. I have to admit, I did not ask a lot of questions about what they were looking for or what kinds of tests they were doing on the stools they checked. I do remember them saying that all the tests revealed no problem.

It’s been a while since I have heard “Do you have any more questions” from a doc. Dr. Smith was very good about ending every conversation with that followed by a very sincere “I’m sorry your son is sick.” I have witnessed a sincere effort by some of the docs to be very informative. Come think of it, I did hear one of the ID docs ask me today if I had any more questions. I might be a little rough on a few of these doctors, I really believe that all of them want to find an answer and are as confounded as we are.
