Mikie's Blog

• 12/22/2005 - Pneumonia?

We now have a new twist. They placed a new PICC line in Mikie today and took some new CT scans.  They now see something that indicates Pneumonia.  He has developed a cough as well and is coughing up some junk so I believe that the scan is right.  They will be starting him back on some antibiotics, though they haven't done a culture yet.  Just marvelous, that's all I have to say.  We left last night and he was in great shape.  We came in this morning and he was all screwed up, and to top it off, no one in the room.  Just a few hours before we got here his heart rate was over 200 again and they had trouble with his PICC line and couldn't get the Antivan in him.  He had slowed down some when we arrived but was still pretty hyper, with a heart rate of over 160 and saturation levels of oxygen low as well. It took him a while to come down and Lorraine spent the day with him while they put in a new PICC line and did the scans.  She said he was pretty calm all day after they got a dose of Antivan in him. When I got here a while ago from work he was breathing pretty hard like he was just starting into another period of agitation.  They are hitting him about ever 3 or 4 hours.  This time I called the nurse when his sats dropped below 80 and heart rate went over 120.  We rolled him on his bad side and he coughed a few times and I was able to get some mucus out of him. It worked pretty good, because we didn't have to give him Antivan and right now (30 minutes later) his sats are 100% and his heart rate is under 100 and his breathing is normal.  We warned them last night to stay on top of it or they would have their hands full.  Lorraine is staying tonight.

BTW, it's been over an hour now and Mikie is still doing very well.  His breathing sounds great.

Good news!  Dr. ----------- (he is the guy we called Dr. Gloom) from respiratory just came in.  He checked the scans and listened to Mikie and said he sees no sign of pneumonia!

I even feel better.
