I know it has been a long time since I posted anything, but it is for good reason. Mikie has just been doing so well! His health has really improved since his last brush with death.
But, he still has some problems. His legs have become stiffer than they every have before. It has gotten harder and harder to change him and make him comfortable in his chair. We saw Dr. Locke, an orthopedic doctor, and he has recommended that we let him do surgery on Mikie soon. We told him about the vein access problems he had in the past so he said Mikie would go in the hospital a day early to insure they could get access before the surgery. Since Mikie has been back on a steady diet of formula and he has been very active I feel that his vein health has probably improved. Doc says he would do the surgery in stages, and that he would try to get Mikie some relief by cutting the tendons in his legs first. He calls this soft surgery. But the x-ray showed that Mikie's left hip is displaced severely and that the best thing to do with it is remove the hip bone from the joint down about 6" or so. If the soft surgery works Mikie could be home in a day or two. The bone surgery is much more extensive and his hospital stay would be longer, probably a week.
Anyway, we're looking at late October or early November, or maybe not at all. We think the wise thing to do right now is find a doctor that will oversee Mikie's general health. Dr. Young is great but he doesn't have hospital privileges. What we need to decide is if we want to put Mikie through another hospital stay or do our best to live with things the way they are. He is quite comfortable in his bed, but he really needs to get up and out once in a while.
I'll try to do a better job about posting updates!
