Those Mardi Gras beads won't keep that ass afloat!

"I almost protested the war in the beginning...almost, 'Till I saw what happened to them Dixie Chicks. I said fuck that! If they'll do that to three white women they will tear my black ass to pieces. I don't wanna hear that shit!"
Dave Chapelle

This Hurricane Katrina shit is getting way out of hand. Everyone is pointing a finger at everyone else. Hell we even got rap songs out about this shit. Take a listen to this one by the Houston based rap group The Legendary K.O. called “George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People” using Kanye West's "Goldigger" which features a great sample of Jamie Foxx's vocals from the Oscar winning Ray. This particular song is below sub-par as far as rap is concerned and if you are really trying only to speak out and shed light on the subject why then do you have this press release out on your site? They are being flooded with interview request I suppose as I have seen this song on several websites and blogs but I can't help but notice that they have a new album coming out. Maybe they'll do something positive and agree to donate all the money they make from their album to the Katrina Relief Fund since according to what I read in the press release they have already been quite generous. Highly unlikely but hey, they just want to help right?

I also found this one from the mighty Mos Def called "Katrina Klap". Definitely a higher production value here as opposed to the previous groups cut and it is strengthened by New Orleans rapper Juvenile's beat from his classic "Nolia Clap". Not Def's best work but I was shocked to find on the track a diss aimed at U2's Bono:
"It's enough to make you holler out. Like where the fuck is Sir Bono and his famous friends now? Don't get it twisted man, I dig U2, but if you ain't about the ghetto, then fuck you too! Who cares about rock and roll when babies can't eat food?".

Um, excuse me if I get my ghetto pass revoked for asking the question but what the fuck did Bono do other than have his ass on TV performing with Mary J. Blige trying to raise money for the Katrina victims? I thought we was all trying to pin this shit on George Bush? Dammit I must have missed a memo or something. If we as black folk are going to blame everyone who is white for what happened in the N.O. aren't we supposed to have a meeting and run this shit through Jesse Jackson first since it's a well known fact that he speaks for all of us.

I commented on Kanye West's statement about President Bush a few posts back. I felt that the comments were untrue and ill timed due to the setting and that the statement itself might have polarized folks who otherwise might have donated. While I disagreed with the statement (or at least part of it) he had the right to express his views and I am surprised to see Kanye being taken to task even on anti-Bush sites and blogs. I have seen dozens of flat out racist posts and comments from people on the left. There are plenty on the right too but I was expecting those.

It is a long standing belief within the black community that we as black folks can share in the American dream and even prosper as long as we don't say things that upset white folk. As long as we don't forget our place and keep our mouths shut then we too will be allowed a share of the spoils. Perhaps some of you thought Kanye stepped out of his place and he needed to be reminded of it.

I'd like to dedicate this blog entry to Terius Gray, known to world at large as the rapper Juvenile. Juvenile grew up in the poverty stricken uptown section of New Orleans, a resident of the infamous Magnolia housing projects. Juvenile's home on Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish was completely destroyed along with all of his possessions and he is still unable to locate many of his relatives, some of whom were unable to evacuate the area in time. My thoughts and prayers are with you Juvey and I applaud your work with the Red Cross to help all of those whose lives were shattered in Katrina's wake. I end with Set it Off from Juvenile's 2001 classic Project English.
