• 2/12/2008 - Natalie Cole: Amy's Wins Send a 'Bad Message'
"I don't think she should have won," the veteran Grammy winner says of Winehouse

Dr. Phil, move over. There's a new advocate for tough love on the circuit: Natalie Cole.
The multiple Grammy winner – her first win, in 1975, was for best new artist of the year – told PEOPLE at Sunday's Warner Music Group post-Grammy party that she took a dim view of Amy Winehouse's awards sweep at the Grammy ceremony earlier in the evening.
"I don't think she should have won. I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together," said Cole, 58. "We have to stop rewarding bad behavior."
Of Winehouse, 24, who is currently in rehab in England, Cole says: "I'm sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it's not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too. She needs to get herself together."
On the seriousness of Winehouse's troubles, Cole – who over the years has battled her own substance-abuse problems, successfully – observes, "I mean, she could die. This isn't something that's cute and fun just to throw around in the press. The girl really has a problem, and I think for those of us who have been in the business long enough, we know the sacrifice it takes. This is about discipline and hard work, and you don't get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded."
Performance 'Fine'
In all, Winehouse won five Grammys – including record of the year, song of the year and best new artist. She also rocked the crowd inside Los Angeles's Staples Center with a live-via-satellite rendition of "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab."
"Her performance was fine," surmised Cole. "I don't take anything away from her talent, but I just feel like she's stepping into a place that she hasn't earned yet."
As for whom Cole, whose new jazz CD will be out in August, would have lavished with Grammy gold, the singer replied, "Rihanna, even Beyoncé. "I just feel like they're ready to go the long haul. You can tell how hard they work, they're great people, their heart is in the right place. These are the people we should be praising, these are the people we should be encouraging."
She added, "And the others, we need to help them." |

Britney Spears has class – dance class, that is.
The 26-year-old singer – who's in the midst of a custody battle over her own kids, Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1 – logged some quality kiddie time Monday, teaching an hour-long dance lesson to a group of six children.
"The class was amazing," Robert Baker, director of the Millennium Dance Complex, tells PEOPLE.
In addition to choreographed routines to vintage Madonna songs "True Blue" and "Material Girl" and "Holiday," Spears – wearing ripped fishnets, red boy-shorts and a blue top – also allowed her pupils to free-style dance.
"She even played age-appropriate games in a circle, pretending to be a choo-choo train," Baker said. "Britney was just amazing with the kids and everyone ended up having a blast. At the end of the hour class, all the kids hugged Britney and she seemed very happy."
Kids 'Thrilled'
The kids, aged 4 to 7, were selected from the studio's junior program. "The parents gave their permission," Baker said. "They were thrilled. One parent summed it up: 'It's a once in a lifetime event.'"
Well, maybe not. Spears had so much fun, "She asked to please teach a class tomorrow," said Baker, a longtime Spears friend. "We plan to put together a group of about 20 kids for her."
After the class wrapped up at 7 p.m., Spears – who has rehearsed at Millennium three times since Friday – spent another hour and a half working on a dance routine for her single "Hot as Ice."
"She seems very focused about getting back into her old life," said Baker. "[She's] focusing her energy on creating and dancing." |

The masseuse who discovered Heath Ledger's body spoke to the actor's friend Mary-Kate Olsen twice on the phone before dialing 911, police sources confirm.
Masseuse Diana Wolozin arrived at Ledger's Manhattan apartment to give him a massage at about 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. When he didn't come out of his bedroom, she called his cell phone and got no answer, according to the sources.
She then went inside his bedroom, saw him lying in bed, set up the massage table near his bed, and shook him. When the 28-year-old actor did not respond, the masseuse – who knew that Ledger was friends with Olsen – used the speed dial on Ledger's cell phone to call Olsen in California asking for help, the sources say.
Olsen, 21, initially told the masseuse she would call security people in New York for help. The masseuse then called Olsen back to say she would call 911 herself, the sources say.
According to reports in the New York Post and New York's Daily News, Ledger and the Olsen twin were dating.
Wolozin called 911 at 3:26 p.m. She told authorities Ledger was not breathing and she tried to perform CPR while on the phone, but he was unresponsive.
Emergency aid workers arrived at the apartment at almost the exact same time as Olsen's security people – seven minutes later.
The source confirmed information first reported by the New York Times. It also clarifies Olsen's link to the case. Earlier rumors erroneously said that Ledger had died in Olsen's apartment |

• 1/24/2008 - More Celebrity Tributes Pour in for Heath Ledger

As Hollywood copes with the untimely death of Heath Ledger, those who knew him are sharing their memories. Here's the latest roundup:
Monica Bellucci
A costar with Ledger in the 2005 film The Brothers Grimm, Bellucci told PEOPLE: "With Heath I had the chance to know, not only a great actor, but a generous, sensitive human being, always attentive of others. It is a true loss."
Jeff Klein
The hotelier behind The City Hub in New York and Sunset Tower in Los Angeles blogged for The New York Times about his experience with Ledger, who stayed at the Sunset Tower with Michelle Williams and daughter Matilda after filming Brokeback Mountain.
He was one of Klein's first celebrity clients, describing Ledger as "one of the kindest, sweetest guests we have ever had" and "a gentleman to all the employees." Klein also was grateful for Ledger's help with a business deal. "I remember one time I was having a business meeting with an elderly event planner of the gay persuasion... Ledger passed by us in the lobby and with all the confidence that only someone truly comfortable with their sexuality could muster, he winked at the event planner, who just about fainted. Needless to say, I snagged the very lucrative event, thanks to Ledger's flirtatiousness...To this day, I appreciated the effort he made."
Gary Oldman
This summer Oldman will appear onscreen beside Ledger in The Dark Knight. Oldman told L.A. radio station Indie 103.1 FM that Ledger's performance as the Joker is "remarkable." Oldman added: "he put his signature on this role" and is "better than Jack [Nicholson]" who owned the role in 1989. "His interests and talents extended beyond acting... He'd do these experimental films... You could tell he was a promising writer and director, sadly the world won't see." |

To the world, Heath Ledger was an Academy Award-nominated actor with a bright professional future ahead of him. But to his daughter Matilda, he was so much more.
"She's such a daddy's girl," Calypso buyer Michelle Vella told PEOPLE. "I don't know how you tell her she's not going to see her dad again."
Vella often saw Ledger in Calypso Kids, a store near Ledger's SoHo apartment, and was always struck by his calm interactions with 2-year-old Matilda – never rushing her through the store and letting her play as long as she liked. "The way he acted with her was motherly," she explained. "You don't see men acting so comfortably and patiently with their kids. It was amazing."
In the fall, Vella remembers the duo coming in after getting ice cream. "He came in and she was finishing the ice cream and it spilled on her shirt," she said, adding that Matilda didn't like feeling "dirty." After Matilda chose a new shirt, Ledger spent time making sure it fit and that she liked it. "They were so cute [together]."
Liz Bullis, 22, observed Ledger with Matilda in Gourmet Garage, the specialty grocery store in downtown Manhattan where she works. "I saw him a couple times with his daughter," she said. "He would carry her on his shoulders."
Vella also noted that Matilda was always on her dad's shoulders. "She never walked on the street – she was always up high."
"He was one of the best fathers I've ever seen," she added. "If you saw them, you'd fall apart knowing she's not going to have that anymore." |

• 1/24/2008 - Dark Knight Ad Campaign to Keep Heath?
THURSDAY JANUARY 24, 2008 04:55 PM EST
By Stephen M. Silverman

Heath Ledger's death puts a giant question mark over the already-launched ad campaign for this summer's big-budget Batman sequel The Dark Knight.
Ledger's villainous character of the Joker figures heavily in Warner Bros.' ad plan for the release, reports the Wall Street Journal – which quotes a studio spokeswoman as saying the marketing campaign would continue but declined further comment.
Though the movie isn't due to open until July 18, its sales pitch kicked off in October with an elaborate online teaser, which was replaced in December with The Dark Knight's prologue shown before the Will Smith hit I Am Legend. The Dark Knight's trailer also debuted that month, with both the prologue and trailer featuring Ledger's Joker.
The movie's poster also stars Ledger in his Joker makeup, with the slogan "Why So Serious?" scrawled in red.
With The Dark Knight still in post-production in Hollywood, the Journal reports that some of Ledger's dialogue may still need to be re-recorded.
On Wednesday, Warner Bros. issued a statement, saying: "The studio is stunned and devastated by this tragic news. The entertainment community has lost an enormous talent. Heath was a brilliant actor and an exceptional person. Our hearts go out to his family and friends."
Untimely deaths have plagued Hollywood before, most famously James Dean's 1955 fatal crash death before the opening of Giant – coincidentally, also a Warners picture. The studio's seeming curse returned in 1983, with its The Twilight Zone movie. Actor Vic Morrow was killed in a helicopter accident on the set. |

Certainly friends, definitely party pals and maybe more, Heath Ledger and Mary-Kate Olsen first met over the summer of 2006, at the time he was living at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, PEOPLE has learned.
More recently, "Mary-Kate and Heath were casually dating for three months before Heath's death," a source has told PEOPLE. "They were hooking up, but neither were particularly interested in making it exclusive."
As for what drew the two together, says the source, "They had a bond that was based on partying, and they had the same tastes in partying ... like, in terms of where they liked to hang out in New York, what time they would want to go out. They just had the same sensibility."
At the time of their first becoming acquainted – the summer after Ledger's Oscar nomination for Brokeback Mountain – Ledger and Olsen were spotted together having lunch at the Chateau with a group of friends, and Ledger was described as being charmed by Olsen, who made him laugh as he would scarf down a big meal.
"Mary-Kate made him laugh a lot," an eyewitness recalled.
Both the New York Post and Daily News reported this week that Ledger, 28, and the Olsen twin, 21, were dating.
Linked By a Phone Call
Whatever their relationship, the two were again linked when reports surfaced that she received two phone calls from masseuse Diana Wolozin, who arrived for an appointment at the actor's New York City apartment on Tuesday only to find him dead in his bedroom.
Wolozin, aware that Ledger and Olsen were friends, used the speed dial on Ledger's cell phone to call Olsen in California to ask for help, sources said. Olsen told the masseuse she would call her security people in New York to assist in the matter.
Things were far more carefree back in the summer of '06, "They were all talking about scripts and telling funny stories about directors and people in the biz," remembers the eyewitness. They also shared something else in common: Both smoked Marlboro Reds. |

Heath Ledger, the actor who quickly transformed from Aussie heartthrob to Oscar nominee and doting dad, was found dead at his Manhattan residence Tuesday, a New York police spokesman confirms. He was 28.
Police say the death may have been drug-related and that "prescription-type drugs" were found near his body.
Ledger was found in the bedroom of his SoHo apartment around 3:30 p.m. by his housekeeper and a masseuse who had arrived for an appointment with the actor, police say.
Ledger was nude, lying on the floor curled up, at the foot of his bed. He did not respond when they shook him, and the housekeeper called 911. He was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m. ET.
Authorities said they did not suspect foul play but that medication was found near the body.
"There were some drugs found around the body – prescription-type drugs," a police spokesman tells PEOPLE. The spokesman says there were two bottles of prescription sleep aids, and that the prescriptions were made out to Ledger.
A medical examiner removed Ledger's body from the apartment just before 6:30 p.m. ET, and New York City Medical Examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove says the autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Despite initial reports that Ledger was subletting the apartment from Mary-Kate Olsen, reps for the actress denied that Olsen ever owned or lived in the apartment.
Ledger was last spotted publicly in London on Saturday on the set of Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Photos showed Ledger wearing a clown costume. Other pictures of Ledger out of costume show him with long brown hair and a dark goatee.

Oscar Nomination & A Baby Girl

Their daughter, Matilda Rose, was born in New York on Oct. 28, 2005. Ledger and Williams, who shared a brownstone together in Brooklyn, split in September 2007.
Ledger began his acting career in 1996, when he was 17, in an Australian TV series called Sweat, but later found big-screen stardom in Hollywood with 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, opposite Julia Stiles. He soon followed it with films including 2000's The Patriot and 2001's A Knight's Tale and Monster's Ball.
"I'm lucky in a sense because I have a job where I get to scream and cry," he told the Chicago Sun-Times in November. "I get to purge myself in ways that don't really affect me personally. When the director yells cut, I just walk out the door and I'm back into my regular life."
In his regular life, he clearly embraced being a dad to Matilda. "Fatherhood has changed me as an artist because I feel things on a deeper level," he said. "I think my performances will grow simultaneously."
In August 2006, Warner Bros. announced that Ledger would play the Joker in The Dark Knight, a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins. On the set, he wowed his costars, including Michael Caine.
"The biggest thing in Batman will be the thing everyone was most worried about: you've got the Joker, and when Jack Nicholson was the joker, well, how are you going to top that?" Caine said last year. "Well, Heath Ledger has. He is extraordinary."

 |
O.J. Simpson is heading back to jail tonight, PEOPLE has learned, after court officials confirmed that his bail was revoked.
Simpson will spend the weekend behind bars in Las Vegas as he awaits a court hearing on the matter on Wednesday.
Documents allege that the fallen football star violated his court-approved bail agreement in an alleged armed robbery incident by trying to contact a co-defendant in his case.
"[Simpson] attempted to dissuade a [Clarence Stewart] from testifying and cooperating with law enforcement," court documents said.
Simpson, who was behind bars on 11 felonies, bailed out after agreeing to turn over his passport and have no contact with any involved in the case. The documents claim that Simpson tried contacting Stewart via his bail bondsman on Nov. 16 last year.
A rep for the You Ring We Spring Bail Bonds said, "We have nothing to say at this time."
In a profanity-laced message, Simpson stated that he hoped Stewart was telling him "the truth."
A spokesman for the Clark County District Attorney did not return calls.
Meanwhile, Kim Goldman, the sister of victim Ron Goldman who was killed in 1994 with Nicole Brown Simpson, says she and her father Fred were "elated" by the news that Simpson is in trouble again.
"He thinks he's above the law – that he doesn't have to honor the rules," Goldman told PEOPLE. "His egotistical behavior gets in the way and it gets him in trouble and I love it. He is sending the message that he doesn't show respect for the law." |

• 1/12/2008 - Lawyer: Cops Issued Restraining Order Against Britney Spears

 |
LAPD officers slapped Britney Spears with a temporary restraining order last Thursday night after her custody standoff, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.
Called an "emergency protective order," it is enforced for five business days. Officers did it to "stabilize the situation," confirmed Kevin Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan.
Kaplan, who did not request the restraining order, declined to say whether he would seek to extend it.
"The person it's placed upon would have to stay approximately 100 feet from the other person, or face arrest," says LAPD spokesman Mike Lopez, who could not confirm the restraining order on Spears. "In most cases, it's issued by officers when there's the possibility of imminent and immediate danger to the victim."
Added Kaplan: "Kevin doesn't want to keep his kids from being involved in [Spears's] life. But foremost is that the kids be in an environment of structure [and] stability. The next goal is to get things to a point where both parents are able to participate fully in their [children's] lives."
On Jan. 4, Spears, 26, was stripped of all visitation rights with sons Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1, pending the ex-couple's next custody hearing on Jan. 14.

Nicole Richie and her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden are the parents of a daughter, the couple's rep at Handprint Entertainment tells PEOPLE.
Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz.
"The beautiful healthy baby girl left the hospital with her ecstatic parents," says the rep, who confirmed the birth to PEOPLE exclusively.
Richie, 26, said she was pregnant in July, telling Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America: "I would really want to be someone my child would look up to."
Later, Richie, who had a famously wild childhood, said the idea of parenthood had made her more mature. "When I found out that I was pregnant, there was just something inside of me that felt a responsibility to mend any issues that I've had with my parents in the past, because, listen, I've put them through a lot," she said.
As for Good Charlotte frontman Madden, 28, he told PEOPLE in November he was looking forward to being a dad. "Having a baby is the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me, and to us," he said.
And the new parents plan to teach their little one the value of generosity. In December, the couple started the Richie Madden Children's Foundation to help the less fortunate. "We want our child to be a part of the community, and to know that there's a responsibility to help the community," Madden said at the time.
The couple have yet to set a wedding date, but in September Madden said "marriage is in our future" – he just wasn't sure when. "Right now our priority is our family and is the baby," he said. "That's all we've been thinking about. We are in love and are really happy."

They sure do grow up fast in Hollywood! Little Suri Cruise is not even 2 yet, but already mom Katie Holmes says, "She's a very strong woman."
"I'm very proud of her," the 29-year-old actress added to PEOPLE at Thursday's Glamour magazine kickoff event for V-Day's 10th Anniversary. "She's actually teaching me a lot – probably more than I'm teaching her."
The Mad Money star said she attended the event to support friends Eve Ensler (the author of The Vagina Monologues) and Paula Wagner (husband Tom Cruise's production partner) – but she couldn't help singing the praises of her talented toddler.
"She's very smart and strong," Holmes concluded. "And really magical." |

Katie Holmes only had kind wishes for Nicole Kidman Wednesday night at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Mad Money.
"I'm so happy for her," Holmes, 29, says of Kidman's pregnancy news. "It's wonderful."
Kidman, 40, confirmed earlier this week that she and husband Keith Urban are expecting their first child together. The actress has two adopted children – Connor, 12, and Isabella, 15 – with ex-husband Tom Cruise (who's now, of course, married to Holmes).
Cruise escorted Holmes – in a dazzling strapless Armani dress – to her premiere, but made sure not to steal the spotlight from his wife. Instead he let her work the press solo while he walked across the street to sign autographs and take photos with fans.
The actor was similarly supportive during the making of Mad Money, Holmes said.
"Having [20-month-old daughter] Suri and Tom [on set] was wonderful," she added. "You think you love to do something and then you have the people you love there. It makes it a billion times better and you didn't realize you were missing that before. It's like 'Oh my God, life can be this good.'" |

• 11/22/2007 - Josh Hartnett Dodges Kissing Questions
Josh Hartnett Dodges Kissing Questions
THURSDAY OCTOBER 18, 2007 05:00 PM EDT
By Kristin Boehm
www.mandjshow.com
Josh Hartnett was caught off-guard on national television Thursday when he was asked about rumors of a makeout session with Rihanna (which both have denied).
The Hollywood heartthrob – on The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet to promote his new vampire flick, 30 Days of Night – didn't expect the talk show duo to launch into the sort of personal question that arose.
"Let's just get it out in the open here," co-host Mike Jerrick declared after Juliet Huddy praised the actor for keeping his personal life out of the media spotlight – until recently.
"You were kissing on Rihanna," stated Jerrick matter-of-factly.
Hartnett, 29, was visibly uncomfortable with the topic. "Whoa, whoa, whoa ... No, no, no ... C'mon you guys ... This is ... uh ... We weren't supposed to talk about these things were we?"
Huddy replied, "You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to."
The actor replied: "I can't really respond to things like that because if I start responding to them everybody will want a response on anything."
"Half ... 95 percent of the stuff written about me is not true," Hartnett concluded.
And, for the record, he was born in Minnesota, not San Francisco as commonly misreported, he said. |

Simon Cowell may not have been in the crowd at L.A.'s Nokia theater Sunday night, but the American Idol vibe was alive and well at the 35th Annual American Music Awards.
While the striking writers left four-time host Jimmy Kimmel to wing his shtick (and attempt the Soulja Boy dance), Idol alum Carrie Underwood, straight off her wins at the Country Music Association Awards earlier this month, picked up three more trophies.
"This is one heck of a night," she gushed, accepting the award for favorite country album. She also won favorite country female artist and an audience text-in award for favorite artist. And, ever the Southern belle, she was overheard saying "holy cow" as her name was read for the second time.
Chris Daughtry, the other nominated Idol, joined his eponymous band, Daughtry, at the podium three times as they won favorite pop-rock album for Daughtry, as well as breakthrough artist and adult contemporary artist.
"Wow. I can't believe we're in the category with Justin Timberlake and Linkin Park. It's pretty awesome," Daughtry said.
The night's other big winners included Akon (soul/R&B male), Rihanna (soul/R&B female) and Justin Timberlake (pop/rock male and soul/R&B album), who accepted his awards via satellite from Australia, where he is on tour.
While Kimmel's dancing left more than a little to be desired, the performance by Chris Brown and his dancers to "Kiss Kiss" – a literal high-wire act with hip-hop versions of Tron-style suits – had Celine Dion speechless backstage in the pressroom.
Likewise, Beyoncé and Sugarland's countrified version of her hit "Irreplaceable" had the crowd on its feet.
On a serious note, Usher, Kid Rock and Rihanna took time to send condolences to Kanye West, who's grieving the loss of his mother, Donda, whose funeral is set for Tuesday in Oklahoma City.

• 11/22/2007 - Kanye West Breaks Down at Paris Concert
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2007 09:30 AM EST
By Peter Mikelbank
Only a week after his mother's death, Kanye West returned to the concert stage Saturday night in Paris, only to dramatically break down in tears, audience members tell PEOPLE.
Nearing the end of the more than 60-minute performance, with the riff of "Hey Mama" beginning, West attempted to introduce the tribute to a sold-out crowd at Le Zénith in Paris, saying "this song is for my mother...." and could get no further. (See the YouTube video.)
"He just cracked," one attendee tells PEOPLE, "He was at the end of his concert and had just started to dedicate the song and then he just lost it completely."
"He said the word, 'Mother' and just couldn't go any further," Le Parisien journalist Meddy Magloire said. "A back-up singer, the DJ and a guitar player came over to console him. It looked like he might collapse. He just couldn't continue. He just stood there in a spotlight, crying while the band continued playing."
After a few moments of stunned silence, Magloire says, the audience of 5,000 reacted by offering calls of encouragement, which grew into applause.
The band restarted the song, but West left the stage, returning after 10-15 minutes to conclude the concert with a rousing performance of "Stronger."
"He was very nervous, seemed to have gathered himself up, and had a lot of energy," Magloire says. "He kept shouting out to the audience, 'I need you... I need you right now.' and the public was screaming back. It was magic."
Surprise Appearance
West had been reclusive since death of his mother. He canceled a Victoria's Secrets performance on Thursday and was not at the memorial for her in Chicago on Friday.
His arrival in Paris at the Hotel Le Meurice on Friday, accompanied by fiancée Alexis Phifer and her son, was unexpected, coming just hours after another scheduled concert set for Monday in Amsterdam was officially canceled.
West is scheduled to perform in Brussels on Sunday night. It's now expected he will return to the United States for his mother's funeral in Oklahoma City on Tuesday afternoon before returning to Europe to perform in London on Thursday.

The funeral for Donda West was held Tuesday in Spencer, Okla., drawing her tearful son Kanye and music stars Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Anita Baker.
Kanye West broke down while talking about his mother, whose champagne-colored coffin arrived at the True Vine Ministries church in a white hearse. He said he wanted her not to "rest in peace, but rest in paradise," according to Entertainment Tonight.
In his brief speech, the rapper also told people he was saying a few words because his mother would have wanted him to and would have told him to "get up there," guests told PEOPLE.
Baker sang "Summertime" while John Legend played the piano. Donda West was a big fan of Baker's and had attended her show in Los Angeles just a few weeks ago. R&B star Erykah Badu and rapper/producer Pharrell Williams also attended.
"It was a beautiful service," says a guest.
Donda West, 58, died Nov. 10 a day after having plastic surgery. The coroner says she died of apparent surgical complications. |

Dennis Quaid's Newborn Twins Hospitalized

By Howard Breuer

The newborn twins of Dennis Quaid and wife Kimberly were hospitalized Tuesday in Los Angeles, reportedly in intensive care.
The actor's rep, Cara Tripicchio, declined to give a reason, but said in a statement: "Dennis and Kimberly appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers and hope they can maintain their privacy at this difficult time."
Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, who were born on Nov. 8, were accidentally given a major dose of the anti-coagulant heparin, TMZ.com reports.
The babies are in stable condition in the neo-natal intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, TMZ reports.
Hospital Apologizes
The hospital did not directly comment on the Quaid twins. But it released a statement saying that on Sunday a "preventable error" occurred with three unidentified patients receiving heparin.
"I want to extend my deepest apologies to the families who were affected by this situation, and we will continue to work with them on any concerns or questions they may have," said Dr. Michael L. Langberg, chief medical officer at Cedars.
He added: "This was a preventable error, involving a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures, and there is no excuse for that to occur at Cedars-Sinai. Although it appears at this point that there was no harm to any patient, we take this situation very seriously."
According to Langberg, three unidentified patients had their IVs flushed with an overly high concentration of heparin, used to keep IV catheters from clotting.
"As a result of a preventable error, the patients' IV catheters were flushed with heparin from vials containing a concentration of 10,000 units per milliliter instead of from vials containing a concentration of 10 units per milliliter," said Langberg. "The error was identified by Cedars-Sinai staff, who immediately performed blood tests on the patients to measure blood clotting function."
Other patients were tested as a precaution, Langberg said.
In the end, two of the patients had to be given a drug to reverse the effects of the heparin to help restore blood clotting to normal, he said.
"Additional medical tests and clinical evaluation conducted on the two patients indicated no adverse effects from the higher concentration of heparin or from the temporary abnormal clotting function," Langberg said. "Doctors continue to monitor the patients."
Quaid's twins were born via a gestational carrier – a woman who carries another couple's baby conceived by the parents' own egg and sperm. |

• 11/22/2007 - Sexiest Man ALive
The Sexiest Men Alive
Matt Damon takes the top honor, but he wasn't alone in turning up the heat. Check out some of the sexy men (Patrick! Brad!) who made PEOPLE's list
MATT DAMON
George Clooney and Brad Pitt have shamelessly campaigned for him since 2001, but this year's winner was Bourne to the title. "You've given an aging suburban dad the ego-boost of a lifetime," Damon, 37, told PEOPLE, explaining why he couldn't possibly accept the crown – which perfectly demonstrates many of the reasons we chose him in the first place: irresistible sense of humor, rock solid family man, heart-melting humility

PATRICK DEMPSEY
Four seasons into Grey's Anatomy and his Dr. Shepherd can still make EKGs go haywire, but in real life "defining romance is very tricky," says Dempsey, 41. The father to 9-month-old twins Darby and Sullivan and daughter Talula, 5, has been married to wife Jillian for eight years. "It's not just candles and flowers." The secret to keeping the spark alive? The eyes. Hers. "I was always taken by them," he says. "They're warm, sparkly eyes. That's the most beautiful part of someone."

RYAN REYNOLDS
Some of us fell in love with his sweet side in Just Friends. Still others would say his sexiest feature is his chiseled abs (have you seen Blade: Trinity?). But according to the actor, 31, neither one ranks as his best feature: "I'm 6'2", so it would have to be my height. I'm not a pocket-size actor."

BRAD PITT
Hey guys – who should play you in a movie? Skinny rocker Tommy Lee: "I want Brad Pitt." Funky comic Carrot Top: "Brad Pitt." Swiss tennis star Roger Federer: "Brad Pitt!" Even former President Clinton?? Nah, Bill said recently of Pitt, 43, "He's way too good-looking."

JAMES MCAVOY
The Scottish actor has fans swooning with his portrayal of Robbie Turner, a lovesick WWII soldier pining for his childhood sweetheart Cecilia (Keira Knightley) in Atonement. "He doesn't want anything else," says the Scottish actor. "It's a passionate, sexy thing." Indeed. "The director gave us instructions like, 'Pull the leg up, Keira, now grab his hair. Unbutton your flies. James, kiss her on the neck,'" recalls McAvoy of a love scene with Knightley. "It's never comfortable. But I did have a good partner to do it with."

JOHNNY DEPP
Why is he sexy? For starters, there's his quirky style (he lives in France, dresses like a rock star, is not afraid of a little eyeliner) and his devil-may-care spirit (didn't take a single singing lesson to prepare for his role in the upcoming musical Sweeney Todd). Most of all, there's something heart-melting about how gaga he is for his gaggle – daughter Lily-Rose, 8, and son Jack, 5, his kids with longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. "Suddenly you meet your reason to live," Depp, 44, told London's Daily Mail about being a father. "They make me happy."

DAVE ANNABLE
The Brothers & Sisters star, 28, is single, but not for long if he gets to break in his favorite pick-up line (which he swears he's never used). "So let's say you and I are at a club, and I go up to you and say, 'Excuse me, how much do you think a polar bear weighs?' And you would say, 'I don’t know,' and I'd say, 'Let's just say it's enough to break the ice. I'm Dave, how are you?' "

WILL SMITH
If he were the last man standing, we'd take him. But the 39-year-old actor who plays Earth's probably-only survivor in I Am Legend says that's not possible. "Either I'm going to be with [wife] Jada," he told Ebony, "or I'm going to be dead."

JAVIER BARDEM
After seeing that recent shot of him in a leg-locking horizontal clutch with Penélope Cruz on a beach in the Maldives, who could deny the Spaniard is a sex symbol? Well, he could. "It just makes me laugh," says Bardem, 38, who's starring in Love in the Time of Cholera and No Country for Old Men. "I see a guy who looks like he's been beaten with a baseball bat." At least Bardem acknowledges that he has a certain seductive intensity. "Once you start to get older, you have to focus and be passionate about life day after day."

SHEMAR MOORE
The ex-model has come up with the perfect recipe for what it takes to feel sexy: "A fresh haircut is so important. I wear my hair so low. Freshly faded," says Moore, 37, who stars on CBS's Criminal Minds. "A nice tan in my back yard so I can get that bronze, brown-sugar glow, a vintage pair of jeans and white button down shirt with a couple of buttons open. A chrome chain. Pair of sneakers."

BEN AFFLECK
The brand new Ben is slimmer and altogether sexier. "I'm healthier now than I've ever been," the 35-year-old actor and director told Parade. And daughter Violet brings out his soul. "All I want to do is go home, just to be around her again."

ADRIAN GRENIER
He might live a lavish, womanizing life on Entourage, but in the real world, the 31-year-old is much more low-key when it comes to romance. "My sexiest night was a night spent with a beautiful woman I loved in a Super 8 motel after a wedding," he says. "Why was it sexy? It kind of speaks for itself. Have you ever been in a hotel with someone you love?"

WILL YUN LEE
The 32-year-old star plays a special agent on Bionic Woman, but if he had the chance to step into a bionic body, what would he want made super-strong? "Bionic legs. Can any guy be trusted with bionic vision?" You've gotta love a man who's honest!

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Last year he brought sexy back; this year he's exchanging some of his bravado for irresistible charm. At the VMAs he gave props to young R&B singer Chris Brown, saying he "reminded me how much I'm getting older," and he's been poking fun at himself during his world tour. "My parents instilled in me the mindset of always being humble," the 26-year-old told London's Daily Telegraph, "so I'd like to believe all the teen idol stuff went in one ear and out the other."

Nicole Richie is using her Wizard of Oz-themed baby shower to benefit charity.
The Simple Life star and boyfriend Joel Madden, who are due to have their first child in January, will donate baby gifts to 100 expectant families in need through the newly-formed Richie Madden Foundation through the Los Angeles Free Clinic.
"It's really sweet," says shower guest Rashida Jones, of NBC's The Office. "With all the swag these days, we're given so much stuff it's almost wasteful, and it's kind of nice when we're giving to each other to give to someone else."
While many friends at Sunday's shower in Beverly Hills donated gifts to the charity, they also brought gifts for Nicole and Joel to keep – including one children's book from every guest to help build the baby's library.

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal must've picked up a taste for wine – and for each other – when they were recently in Italy together, because just three weeks after returning from that trip, the two were off among the grapes again, this time in California's wine country.
As PEOPLE reports in its latest issue, Witherspoon, 31, and Gyllenhaal, 26, checked into the Carneros Inn in the Napa Valley last Sunday, and went on to spend a cozy 24-hours in one of the resort's private homes.
"They were very affectionate with one another," says an onlooker. "They were cuddling, and he kept giving her little kisses."
The two even bailed on a couples massage in favor of an evening in, the source says, adding, "It was clear they wanted to be left alone."
It Started in Spring
Although initially careful to avoid the spotlight when they first began dating, Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal's relationship first got noticed when they were spotted March 23 dining with two other couples at Los Angeles's Il Sole – where they were "being playful," an observer said at the time.
Although the pair didn't have much screen time together while filming Rendition for eight weeks in Morocco, during a reshoot in L.A., "Jake went and reintroduced himself to Reese," a source close to both actors told PEOPLE.
From there, said a friend of Witherspoon's, "Things slowly progressed, but it was never something she thought would happen from the start. She just kind of developed this little crush over time."
Only by June, that crush had been crushed: "They just recently broke up," a source in Witherspoon's circle told PEOPLE. "It's totally and completely over."
Except, little by little, the pieces started coming together again.
"Jake's cute," Ellen DeGeneres told Witherspoon on the former's TV show last month (while Witherspoon was promoting Rendition). The Walk the Line Oscar-winner swiftly concurred.
"Yeah," Witherspoon replied with a giggle. "He's great." |
